Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), in collaboration with Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo (UMPO), Universitas Primagraha (UPG), and STIE Arlindo, conducted a community service program titled “Training and Support for Utilizing Corn Cobs and Sustainable Fashion” in Karangpatihan Village, Ponorogo, on Sunday, July 28, 2024.

The community service team was led by Prof. Dr. Rahmawati, M.Si, Ak., along with its members M. Rudianto, S.E., S.Sn., M.Sn., Dr. Rochmat Aldi Purnomo, S.E., M.Si., Sarah Rum Handayani Pinta, M.Hum., Siti Nurlaela, and Isnayni Sabila.

The team provided training on sustainable fashion through the production of Batik Ciprat using corn cobs to workers with disabilities in Karangpatihan Village and disabled students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo (UMPO).

As the main speaker, Prof. Rahmawati outlined several innovations introduced in the training, including the use of corn cobs in waste processing, natural dyes as alternatives to synthetic dyes traditionally used, and the application of bone meal to enhance the efficiency of Batik Ciprat production.

“The objectives of this training and support activity are twofold: first, to teach the use of processed corn cobs for waste management. Second, to introduce natural dyes as an alternative to synthetic ones, as international consumers are increasingly interested in natural colors,” she explained.

Dr. Rochmat Aldi added that the objective of the program is to equip the Karangpatihan community, especially UNS’s partner, with skills in sustainable fashion and waste management, specifically how to use corn cobs in Batik Ciprat production.

“And this effort doesn’t end with us; it can be further developed using other methods, such as fans or improved batik techniques and motifs that are more sustainable,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Karangpatihan Village Head Eko Mulyadi expressed his gratitude to the FEB UNS Community Service Team for their assistance in alleviating poverty in the village. “Thank you to all parties who have contributed to our efforts to reduce poverty in Karangpatihan. We are also deeply grateful to everyone who has collaborated to help us develop Batik Ciprat,” he said.

He praised the training as extraordinary, highlighting its potential to help the Karangpatihan community with the development of Batik Ciprat and the implementation of efficient drying techniques.

This event is expected to have a positive impact on the economic and social development of Karangpatihan Village and to promote the use of natural materials in the Indonesian batik industry.

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) welcomed a visit from the FEB Universitas Nusa Cendana (UNDANA) Kupang on Thursday, August 8, 2024. The delegation, led by Dr. Apriana H.J. Fanggidae, SE., M.Si., Dean of FEB UNDANA, was welcomed by the Dean’s Office, Heads of Programs, and Development Economics Study Program (DESP) lecturers at FEB UNS.

In his welcome remarks, Tastaftiyan Risfandy, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Planning, Business Partnership, and Information, extended his greetings and thanks to Dr. Apriana and her team for their visit to FEB UNS.

Tastaftiyan highlighted that UNS has transitioned from a Public Service Agency (PTN-BLU) to a Legal Entity State University (PTN-BH), based on Government Regulation No. 56 of 2020 concerning UNS Surakarta PTN-BH.

He further explained that the faculty-level transformation involves achieving international accreditation. “Achieving international accreditation is not just about obtaining the accreditation itself, but also about the process to attain it, which helps in creating a better culture and governance within the faculty,” he noted.

At the end of his speech, Tastaftiyan invited the FEB UNDANA delegation to engage in direct discussions with Bhimo Rizky Samudro, Ph.D., Head of the DESP Program, and other DESP lecturers present, hoping that the visit would be beneficial for both FEB UNDANA and FEB UNS.

Meanwhile, Dr. Apriana explained that the purpose of her visit was to benchmark the program to the Development Economics Study Program at FEB UNS, as her faculty is currently preparing for reaccreditation. She highlighted that one crucial aspect of the accreditation document is related to benchmarking quality management practices in program development.

Consequently, FEB UNDANA chose FEB UNS as their benchmark. Dr. Apriana also introduced the members of her delegation, including the Vice Dean 1, Program Coordinators, Quality Control Team, and lecturers from the S1 Development Economics Program at UNDANA.

The discussion proceeded smoothly and was concluded with a gift exchange between FEB UNS and FEB UNDANA, followed by a group photo.

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), in collaboration with Pertamina, hosted a gathering entitled “Guyub Rukun Agawe Santosa” held in Bandungan from 2-4 August 2024. The agenda, which involved all academic support staff, leaders ranks, academic supervisors, student mentors, and Dharma Wanita FEB, was organized to strengthen the bonds within the FEB UNS academic community.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of FEB UNS, Prof. Djoko Suhardjanto, M.Com(Hons), Ph.D., Ak., extended his gratitude to Pertamina for their support in making the gathering possible. Prof. Djoko also expressed his thanks to the attending leaders, lecturers, support staff, students, and Dharma Wanita FEB. He acknowledged that his tenure as Dean was coming to an end in a few weeks and apologized for any shortcomings during his leadership. “These are the final weeks of our leadership at FEB. I apologize if there have been any words or actions that did not meet your expectations,” he said.

Prof. Djoko encouraged FEB academic members to maintain harmony and to support each other, emphasizing the need to unite and support the future Dean to ensure further progress for FEB.

“Once again, on behalf of the Dean’s Office and program heads, I apologize. We hope to remain healthy and strong to continue contributing to FEB UNS,” he added.

The event also served as a celebration for Dr. Atmaji, MM’s retirement, who previously served as the Head of the Management Study Program. Prof. Djoko expressed his appreciation for Dr. Atmaji’s contributions to FEB UNS and wished him continued health and enthusiasm.

In response, Dr. Atmaji thanked the Dean and his team for the invitation to the retirement gathering. “Thank you for the invitation, Dean. On behalf of myself and my family, I apologize for any mistakes during our interactions,” he said.

Dr. Atmaji also urged the FEB family to maintain quality, strengthen relationships, and work together to build FEB. “Let us preserve our unity, forgive each other’s mistakes, and support one another to make FEB even better,” he advised.

To further strengthen relationships within the FEB UNS community, enhance teamwork, and improve communication, the gathering included outbound activities. Two teams were recognized for their performance and were presented with awards. Additionally, various prizes were presented to the gathering participants.

The three main prizes were awarded to academic support staff members Ago Yudiantos and Runi Nuvianti, and FEB student Arif Santoso.

The Alumni Association of the Faculty of Economics and Business (KAFEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), together with the Mesen Memorial Campus (MKK) FEB UNS from the 76-80 cohort, also contributed to the Artefac Watu Abadi FEB UNS Endowment Fund for Sustainable Education. Sonny Arifin, a representative of the MKK Community, handed over a number of funds for scholarships to representatives of the Dharma Bekti KAFEB Foundation who were present at the time, Ellytahatin Indah, at the Fiscal Corner Room FEB UNS, Monday, 29 July 2024. The presence of the MKK FEB UNS 76-80 cohort and representatives of the Dharma Bekti Foundation was accepted by the FEB UNS Leaders.

In his remarks, Sonny said that the funds were collected from all members of MKK, the 1976 to 1980 class. Sony also recounted that the MKK 76-80 Community was born in September 2011. At that time, only a few were incorporated, but now there are many more, all students who have studied at the Mesen campus are members of MKK.

Meanwhile, Dr. Dwi Prasetyani, S.E., M.Si., Vice Dean of Academic Research and Student Affairs, in her remarks said that the Dharma Bekti Foundation, initiated by KAFEB, has many benefits for FEB UNS. “The Dharma Bekti Foundation strongly supports our activities, student scholarships, Single-Tuition System (UKT), student activities, funding for students’ competition, and many other activities, basically to support the achievement of FEB’s key performance indicators for the better,” she said.

On this occasion, Dr. Dwi Prasetyani also conveyed various achievements of FEB. On a national scale, FEB is ranked 4th for the best Economics Faculty in Indonesia. Currently, with the seamless cooperation with alumni, the Faculty strives to improve FEB to get a better position and ranking and, hopefully, to be the number 1 university in Indonesia. On the international scale of the World Class Ranking (WUR), FEB UNS is ranked 301-350 for Accounting & Finance and also Economics & Econometrics.

FEB will also prepare for AACSB’s international accreditation. Hopefully, when achieved, it will facilitate the student to participate in an international exchange program at the top universities in the world. At the end of her speech, Dr. Dwi Prasetyani reiterated that the existence of KAFEB will always provide meaningful support in the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education in FEB. “KAFEB is very helpful for us, accelerating our institution’s performance, because our challenges are getting bigger, so we need support beyond our ability,” she said.

For example, the establishment of the Fiscal Corner at FEB UNS, a specific function as part of the partnership between FEB and the Ministry of Finance. Regular meetings and joint programs between alumni in the ministry and lecturers in FEB are initiated and gradually implemented. Collaboration with alumni also makes it easier to access research and community service activities abroad.

The Chairman of the Faculty Senate, Prof. Dr. Tulus Haryono, M.Ek., added that the effort to improve FEB UNS cannot be done individually but must be achieved through collaboration and partnership with alumni. After the handover ceremony for the scholarship funds by MKK 76-80, the representatives of MKK 76-80 took a group photo in front of “Artefac Watu Abadi FEB UNS,” a symbol of alumni’s continuous charity, adopting the concept of Endowment Funds.

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), in collaboration with the UNS Fintech Center, organized the Working Paper Rising Star Student in Finance on Friday, 26 July 2024, at Meeting Room 1, Soeharno TS Building, FEB UNS. The event featured three presenters: M. Yusuf Indra Purnama, newly graduated PhD student of National Central University, Taiwan, and a lecturer at FEB UNS; Bambang Sutrisno, a doctoral student of the Doctoral Program in Economics (PDIE) UNS; and Inas Nurfaida Futri, a master’s student in Management at FEB UNS. The session was discussed by Prof. Ahmet Faruk Aysan from Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar.

Representing the FEB UNS leadership, Putra Pamungkas, S.E., M.Rech., Ph.D., Head of the Undergraduate Study Program in Digital Business, expressed his appreciation to Prof. Aysan and the three presenters. He conveyed his gratitude to Prof. Ahmet Faruk Aysan for his willingness to attend and share insights with the presenters, as well as to the presenters for contributing their working papers in the field of finance.

He further noted that the agenda provided a valuable opportunity for academic exchange, enabling participants to learn together and discuss approaches to developing existing research topics. Putra also extended his appreciation to all participants, emphasizing that the event was designed to benefit attendees through two sessions: the first featuring presentations by the three speakers, and the second providing an opportunity for participants to consult and discuss their research topics and challenges directly with Prof. Aysan.

The first presenter, M. Yusuf Indra Purnama, presented a paper entitled “Robot Deployment and Corporate Risk-Taking,” which examined the economic impact of robot adoption in the industrial sector. His study found that the implementation of robots in industrial firms is associated with a lower level of corporate risk-taking.

The second presenter, Bambang Sutrisno, delivered a paper entitled “Dividend Policy, Stock Price Crash Risk, and Islamic Label,” analyzing the effects of the presence of politically connected members of the Board of Commissioners within firms. The study identified differences between transactional and relational political connections, showing that commissioners with transactional political ties are associated with a higher risk of firm collapse.

The final presenter, Inas Nurfaida Futri, presented her study entitled “The Success of Social Projects in Online Crowdfunding in Indonesia.” Her research indicated that fundraising activities for social causes demonstrate a higher success rate compared to fundraising initiatives for other purposes.

In May 2024, the Community Service Team from the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Solo, provided assistance to the Putri Kawung Joint Business Group (KUBE) in Jarum Village, Bayat, Klaten.

The community service project, entitled “Development of Digital Marketing and Natural Coloring and Utilization of Heating Machines,” was led by Prof. Dr. Rahmawati, M.Si., Ak., and involved students in various program activities.

This initiative aims to improve environmentally friendly production processes, enhance marketing capacities through information technology, strengthen institutional frameworks, and refine the adoption of appropriate technology to improve the quality of batik products using natural coloring.

The methods employed in this community service project included education on brand awareness and several business management skills such as financial management, marketable packaging, and promotion; the practice of environmentally friendly production processes using natural dyes mixed with bone powder; adoption of Appropriate Technology (TTG) for heating machines; capacity strengthening for diversifying both typical Klaten motifs and batik derivative products; quality testing and certification of batik mark quality, especially for batik products using natural coloring; TTG utilization for bone powder in natural dyeing processes to improve product quality and prevent color fading; and information technology-based business management through digital marketing.

This community service activity was designed to benefit all parties involved. For KUBE Batik Putri Kawung, this activity provided valuable experience to further enhance product quality. For academic lecturers, it served as an implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. For participating students, it offered additional knowledge through direct learning about real-world community issues and potential solutions.

Additional support that has motivated artisans in Jarum Village includes government assistance such as a showroom to display products created by the association members and six sewing machines from the Department of Industry and Trade, which have not yet been fully utilized by KUBE Putri Kawung.

Support also came from local government agencies through the village administration, Bappeda, and the Department of Industry and Trade of Klaten Regency. In order to strengthen the independence of the batik industry in Jarum Village, particularly involving the SMEs of KUBE Putri Kawung, the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education is consulted about providing support in the form of facilities for the association’s marketing outlets, managerial skill development for partner SMEs, and infrastructure development for information technology-based supply and marketing networks.

The expected outcome of this activity is to raise the level of understanding among KUBE Putri Kawung business actors, leading to product innovation that ultimately can drive income optimization and the community economic welfare in Bayat, Klaten Regency.
