The digital economy landscape continues to evolve along with its role in the global business sector. In an era where technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, the digital economy is emerging as a transformative force that is changing the industrial, social, and economic order around the world. This message was delivered by the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Prof. Djoko Suhardjanto, in the opening remark of the 2024 Sebelas Maret International Conference on Digital Economics (SMICDE), held on Wednesday 22 May 2024.

Presenting two keynote speakers, Prof. John W. Goodell from the College of Business University of Akron, USA, and Prof. M. Kabir Hasan from the University of New Orleans, the 2024 SMICDE was conducted in a hybrid manner, where participants can join the agenda directly on the venue and through Zoom Cloud Meeting.

“In this conference, there will be 100 articles from 30 universities both from across Indonesia and abroad, which will be presented at 18 parallel sessions. FEB UNS collaborates with reputable international journals indexed by Scopus, which will open up publication opportunities for participants,” explained Prof. Djoko in his welcome speech.

In addition to the two keynote speakers, the 2024 SMICDE also presented three guest speakers; coming from University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Prof. Evan Lau Poh Hock; Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Prof. Hooy Chee Wooi, and Dr. Tastaftiyan Risfandy from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS).

In line with the statement from the Dean of FEB UNS, Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, Vice-Rector for Planning, Cooperation, Business and Information Affairs, UNS hopes that this conference will not only serve as a medium for dissemination of scientific research results, but also as a medium in building international research networks.

“The purpose of this conference is not only as a medium to disseminate research results but also to present publication opportunities, and also to build networks. Thank you to the speakers, Prof. Goodell, Prof. Hasan, Prof. Hooy, and Prof. Evan Lau who always support UNS to keep advancing,” said Prof. Irwan.

In this conference organized by the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) UNS in collaboration with PUI Fintech and Banking, each invited speaker presented material related to the topic of digitalization.

For this occasion, Prof. Goodell presented a material entitled ‘Is ESG non-pecuniary? Important consequences for FinTech and other financial aspects including Islamic finance,’ which was delivered virtually, while Prof. Kabir Hassan delivered a material entitled ‘Digitalization of Finance.’

From the educational point of view, Prof. Evan Lau delivered the material ‘Empowering Sustainable Digital Transformation Through Education.’ Prof. Hooy presented the material entitled ‘Digital Transformation and Firm Performance’ followed by material from Dr. Tastaftiyan Risfandy, ‘Adapting Digital Shifts: Insights from Macro and Micro Contexts.’

In addition to presenting various publication and dissemination opportunities, the 2024 SMICDE event also awarded participants with the best articles award. This Best Paper award, which is sponsored by Bank Jateng, was given to three presenters who had submitted abstracts, which were then selected by the scientific committee.

The three presenters who received the Best Paper award were Antonius Grivaldi Sondakh from Gadjah Mada University, with an article entitled Competitive Information Systems and Knowledge Sabotage: The Moderating Effect of Group Identity, Hadi Ismanto from Doctoral Program in Economics (PDIE) FEB UNS with an article entitled the Role of Sales and Investment on Environmental Performance of Publicly Listed Companies in Indonesia, and Mohamad Egi Destiartono from Universitas Sebelas Maret with an article entitled Does Digitalization Foster Economic Development: Evidence from Emerging Economies.

The Master of Accounting (MAKSI) Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, presented guest lecturers in the Guest Lecture on Ethics, CSR, and ESG Sustainability, Wednesday, April 17, 2024, virtually through Zoom Cloud Meeting.

The agenda, attended by MAKSI Study Program students, invited Prof. Hooy Che Wooi, School of Management, Universiti Sains Malaysia, and Syahid Deradjat, Employee Relations Expert, PT. Pertamina (Persero), as speaker.

Opening the virtual agenda, Dr. Wahyu Widarjo, Head of the MAKSI FEB UNS delivered a welcoming speech at the opening of the event as well as thanking the speakers who were willing to attend and the MAKSI FEB UNS team. “Thanks to Dr. Hooy and Mr. Sahid, who have agreed to become guest lecturers at the MAKSI FEB UNS, as well as to the participants for attending the agenda today,” said Dr. Wahyu.

The first speaker, Prof. Hooy, delivered material entitled “Business Sustainability from Ethics, CSR, and ESG Perspective,” which he said is still rarely discussed in the financial context.

“These three topics are often discussed and are relatively new topics in the financial sector. Today I will deliver material on how to distinguish the three concepts, and how they relate to business sustainability,” he explained.

In general, the definition of ethics refers to rules and behaviors accepted by a group of people, culture, or country, which are generally accepted even if not written. Groups that accept a similar ethical standard usually have similar characteristics, for example, a community group with the same language, or other characteristics. Therefore, an ethical standard that is considered good by one group could be considered wrong by another group. Based on this definition, business ethics has a narrower definition than the general definition of ethics, where it refers to ethical standards used by a group of people involved in similar business activities.

“Ethics are different from the law, when we violate ethics there is often no punishment. In this case, the result received by a business that violates ethics is in the form of ‘social isolation’ which is often carried out by boycotting products,” explained Prof. Hooy.

Still related to ethics, Prof. Hooy explained that the practice of ‘corporate social responsibility’ (CSR) is more inclined to ethics than legal law. The concept of CSR itself refers to the company’s obligations other than to the owner, where the company is expected to balance between profit and the welfare of the community. Meanwhile, the concept of ESG (environmental, social, and governance) which is often equated with CSR, has a wider scope than CSR.

“CSR only covers environmental and social aspects, while ESG also covers governance. Governance itself means a set of systems that enable companies to operate effectively. Both are instruments that can help the sustainability of the company and also the environment,” explained Prof. Hooy.

The material related to corporate sustainability presented by Prof. Hooy is followed by material from Syahid Deradjat, related to business sustainability practices applied by Pertamina.

“Pertamina focuses on three main areas in the practice of environmental social responsibility, including sustainable education, the environment, and the sustainable economy,” explained Syahid Deradjat. In addition, Pertamina has also mapped 10 key SDG sectors related to the company’s operations.

In addition to detailed material exposure, students get the opportunity to interact with the speaker through a question-and-answer process carried out at the end of each material.

There must be risks that cannot be avoided in our daily lives, both small and large risks. Sometimes risks do not originate from our personal decisions but also from others’. In general, the role of non-banking financial institutions such as insurance and pension funds does not eliminate all kinds of risks that occur, but instead to mitigate risks.

This statement was conveyed by the Chief Senior Research Associate of Indonesia Financial Group (IFG), Ibrahim Kholilul Rohman in the Campus Visit Indonesia Financial Group (IFG) Progress 2024 seminar, under the topic of Basic Literacy and Introduction to the Insurance & Pension Fund Industry, hosted at the Konimex Hall, Bachtiar Effendi Building FEB UNS, Thursday (16/5/2024).

In front of more than 100 FEB UNS students, Ibrahim introduced the presence of the Non-Bank Financial Industry (IKNB), especially insurance and pension funds to mitigate risks from various activities and conditions occurring in the community.

IFG is an Insurance and Guarantee Holding SOE that oversees insurance, guarantee, and capital market companies consisting of PT Asuransi Kerugian Jasa Raharja (Jasa Raharja), PT Jaminan Kredit Indonesia (Jamkrindo), PT Asuransi Kredit Indonesia (Askrindo), PT Asuransi Jasa Indonesia (Jasindo), PT Asuransi Jiwa IFG (IFG Life), PT Bahana Sekuritas, PT Bahana TCW Investment Management, PT Bahana Artha Ventura, PT Bahana Kapital Investa, and PT Grahaniaga Tatautama.

He further explains that the risk coverage managed by the insurance sector is extensively broad, covering almost all activities ranging from life, health, and accidents, to risks that occur in industrial activities. In addition, the pension fund sector is also important as a source of financing for the elderly Indonesian generation.

IFG Progress serves several functions for public publication, research, and education as it is ongoing today.

“So, later on, if you, after this event, think that working at IFG is interesting, please contact us and if later on you have a paper or have a study on the type of financial service that can be developed as a research study, let’s learn together, to bring out the potential for self-development, to become investment experts, economists, actuaries and underwriters who together aim to develop IKNB in the future,” he explained.

The agenda was led by Ayya Agmulia Asmarani Islam, and invited four speakers, consisting of Chief Senior Research Associate IFG Progress, Ibrahim Kholilul Rohman; Research Associate IFG Progress, Rizky Rizaldi Ronaldo; and Afif Narawangsa Luviyanto; and FEB UNS Lecturer, Dila Maghrifani.

Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), received a visit from 10 lecturers from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Malaysia on 29-30 April 2024. On the first day of the visit, the lecturers from UiTM carried out two main agendas, namely teaching and community service. The members delegates from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) are Dr. Wan Normila Mohamad, Nur Aila Amirnordin, Hilwana Abd Karim, Maziah Mohamed Arif, Nooraza Tukiran, Norhaniza Md Akhir, Tengku Sharifeleani Ratul Maknu, Dr. Faridah Pardi, Nur Fadhilana Zainal Abedin, and Dr. Nurazilah Zaenal.

The UiTM lecturers teach in five classes at FEB UNS for several courses such as Digital Marketing, SME and Cooperative Management, Position Analysis, Business Communication, and Economic Mathematics II. In addition, the delegates from UiTM were also invited as speakers at an event discussing Financial Ratio and Analysis, which was held in the Konimex Hall and attended by students of the Digital Business Study Program.

In the afternoon, the representatives conducted community service at Pondok Pesantren Tahfidz Ibnu Mubarok Karanganyar.

On the second day of the visit, a discussion was held on the MBKM partnership between FEB UNS and UiTM in the Assembly Room 1 FEB UNS. The activity was attended by the Dean and also the Head of the Study Programs at FEB UNS.

In the forum, Tastaftiyan Risfandy, Ph.D., Vice Dean of Planning, Business, Partnership, and Information conveyed several collaborations that had been carried out between FEB UNS and UiTM, where in the previous year FEB UNS faculty member had the opportunity to teach at UiTM, research collaboration with UiTM, and there was also an opportunity to create a business journal competition.

Prof. Djoko Suhardjanto, Dean of FEB welcomed the arrival of UiTM lecturers and at the beginning of his speech also delivered some of the achievements of FEB.

“FEB is ranked 4th for the best Economics Department in Indonesia. We continue to improve our international reputation through various collaboration and partnership activities, one of them being the collaboration with UiTM. We are very proud to be able to work with UiTM, hopefully in the coming year it can add more programs and activities, not only in teaching but also in publications, research, and community service. Hence, if today we have done a community service in Karanganyar, next time FEB faculty member can visit and conduct some activities in Malaysia, so we back each other up,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, Vice-Rector for Planning, Business, Partnership, and Information also delivered his welcome remark to lecturers from UiTM.

According to him, the culture in Negeri Sembilan and Bahasa Melayu is similar to Indonesian, thus, students can understand the language of instruction and there are no cultural barriers between Indonesia and Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia.

Prof. Irwan also emphasized that the cooperation between FEB UNS and UiTM shall really be implemented. “I don’t like it if we sign a cooperation agreement but there is no activity, the activity must be implemented, in one year I will evaluate to see to what extent the agreement program implementation is and the extent of the real activity implementation,” he said.

Prof. Irwan also conveyed several cooperation schemes at UNS that could be implemented to support the agreement implementation, including international collaborative research, considering that funding from abroad institutions was one of the assessments for universities in Malaysia. Through this scheme, collaborative research can be carried out with funding from both UNS and UiTM.

In addition, visiting professors from UiTM can teach in UNS as visiting professors where the travel, accommodation, and honorarium costs are funded by UNS. This program is also important because becoming an ‘Invited professor at an overseas university’ is also a requirement to obtain the title of professor in Malaysia.

Then there is the scheme to send or delegate UNS lecturers to international universities through the outbound scholar scheme which is also a QS rating assessment point, whereas, UNS lecturers need international exposure to build a portfolio for each individual lecturer. Most importantly, when a FEB UNS lecturer teaches at UiTM or other international universities, the students taught by the lecturer can be categorized as UNS international students.

Furthermore, under the joint supervision scheme, lecturers from UiTM can be part of the thesis/dissertation supervisory team for Master’s students at UNS. Lecturers from UiTM can also come to UNS through this scheme. After the discussion, a cooperation agreement was signed to develop, support, and enrich research development in the subject areas that will benefit both parties.

Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), hosted a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) discussing the FEB UNS International Office (IO) Work Program, Thursday 28 March 2024. The activity held at the Ki Hadjar Dewantara UNS Tower Building was attended by the Heads of Study Programs at FEB UNS, Coordinators, and Sub-coordinators from FEB UNS.

Dr. Dwi Prasetyani, Vice Dean of Academic, Research, and Student Affairs FEB UNS, in her remarks, said that in this activity, participants could collaboratively oversee the formation of international units at FEB UNS. A jointly owned unit, where there is a representative from all study programs at FEB UNS.

According to her, to this day the international activities within the faculty are supervised by a small team, assisted by Tri Mulyaningsih, Ph.D., Retno Tanding Suryandari, Ph.D., and Ratna Malisa Indriawati, ME., whereas other international activities are still conducted at the study program level.

“FEB UNS is internationally accredited, has an international class, and many academic guests from abroad institutions. There have been numerous international-level activities conducted in FEB, but the implementation was still very sectoral, there is not yet a special unit with uniform standards to manage and supervise these activities, which is why we need to establish the FEB IO Unit, afterward we can decide on the name and also the programs,” she explained.

The faculty IO is expected to be an extension of the university IO. Therefore, this FGD agenda also invited Rino Ardhian Nugroho, Ph.D., Head of UPT International Partnership and Services UNS to provide insight into the UNS vision and direction on internationalization activities, as well as, various IO UNS programs and activities.

Furthermore, Tri Mulyaningsih, Ph.D., reported on various activities that have been carried out by the FEB IO Team including Staff Mobility Collaboration between the University of Canberra, Australia, and FEB UNS; Research dissemination in the International Conference for Graduate Students in collaboration with RUDN University, Russia; Co-hosting an International Conference with Thaksin University, Thailand; and proposing a Double Degree/Credit Transfer Program for the Master of Management Program in collaboration with the National Center University, Taiwan.

Meanwhile, in his presentation, Rhino explained that IO UNS programs are an extension of the DIKTI Program, including the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA), Global Challenge, UNS Scholarship, Developing Country Partnership (KNB), Equity Program (WCU), International Grants, and International Government Partnership (IGP).

Rhino also advised a number of the Heads of Study Programs, who were attending the FGD, to report every international lecturer or student in the faculty to IO UNS, thus, they can be registered as international lecturers or international students. This aims to contribute to the data on the percentage of international lecturers and students at UNS, as to this day there has been no record.

On this occasion, the Heads of Study Programs provided suggestions and directions related to the programs that will be carried out for the formation of the FEB IO Unit.

Mitigation is an action or effort made to reduce or control the risk or negative impact of an event or situation. Fire mitigation includes measures taken to prevent a fire or reduce its impact in the event of a fire accident.

Examples include ensuring that buildings have safe evacuation routes, installing smoke detectors, and training human resources in the use of light fire extinguishers (APARs) and emergency procedures.

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), collaborated with CV. Bina Cipta Abadi held fire mitigation training and simulated the use of APAR after Morning Gymnastics, Friday 19 April 2024 at the futsal field in FEB UNS.

Fire mitigation training and simulation of the use of APAR is an important step in improving the safety and preparedness of the FEB UNS Academic Community in dealing with potential fire disasters. This training aims to equip the Academic Support Staff (Tendik) with the knowledge and skills needed to deal with fires quickly and effectively.

The Administrative Coordinator of FEB, Iwan Kusmartono, SH., in his remarks, said that training like this needs to be done regularly.

“This training needs to be carried out regularly because there is indeed an assessment process from the university on Environmental Safety, Security and Health (K3L) at the Faculty level. This is also to increase the ability of our Tendik’s colleagues, especially security personnel, thus they will not forget their duties and job functions. In addition, the academic support staff needs to know how to process if there is a fire emergency or short circuits. We hope everyone can follow the command from the instructor,” he said.

Iwan said, at the same time an inspection visit is scheduled for several buildings. It is possible to add the necessary tools so that FEB UNS can be fully equipped with all K3L facilities in the future.

Meanwhile, Dr. Djuminah, Vice Dean of Human Resources, Finance, and Logistics, asserted that the first and foremost thing is that K3L is our basic capital, and K3L must be firmly attached to the institution’s culture.

“Hopefully, this activity will become a routine event, in line with the development or improvement according to the needs that may occur. Thank you to the team from the fire brigade for attending this training and providing a guideline, and all the staff for their joint training,” she said.

In the training, participants were taught how to prevent fires, fire extinguishing techniques, and the proper use of APAR. In addition, the training also includes knowledge of emergency measures to be taken when facing fire situations.

The instructor also explains how to isolate fire from oxygen, one of which is the traditional way of using gunny sacks, towels, or any type of fabric, as long as it is not synthetic fabrics.

“If there is a fire, take burlap or towels or cloths around us, dip the water, and then tuck it into the fire. When tucking in, you should hold it by clamping the ends between the index finger and the thumb, then the palm is rotated, this is to protect us. Pay attention to the wind direction, if the wind direction is coming from the north, we should approach from the south. We should walk a bit oblique, don’t let the fire catch us. If you have gone forward, never go back again, you must be sure, because when you have gone forward and then back again, the fire will follow the direction of the cloth. Cover the fire with burlap, the fire will be extinguished,” he explained.

Next, he explains the steps to be taken in the event of a gas leak, among others: first, never turn on or turn off the electricity, because it will cause sparks even though small, it will be lighter, let any electrical appliance remain on if it is originally on and let the one turned-off remain off; second, open the doors and windows so that there is a large air circulation; third, remove the regulator and bring the gas cylinder out, wait for 15 minutes for the gas to completely ventilated, when there is no smell of gas, then the condition is safe.

“If there is a fire, first and foremost, never panic. Usually, fires get bigger because we are panicked, immediately call the fire department, then rescue yourself or people around, and if possible rescue items that can still be saved. Some techniques that we have learned today in this training can be done,” said the instructor affirming.
