Behavioral Accounting Research Group FEB UNS Assisted Coastal Fabric Craftsmen in Laban Village

The Behavioral Accounting Research Group, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), organized a community service program in collaboration with Lilik Coastal Fabric Craftsmen group in Laban Village, Sukoharjo, Saturday, 05/06/2023.

The community service team is led by Dra. Y. Anni Aryani, M.Prof.Acc., Ph.D., Ak., along with Dr. Evi Gantyowati, MSc., Ak., Dr. Payamta, MSc., Ak., CPA., Isna Putri Rahmawati, SE., MSc., Ak., Prof. Doddy Setiawan, SE., MSi., Ph.D., Ak., Dian Perwitasari, S.Ak., M.Sc., and An Nurrahmawati, S.E., M.Sc., as the members.

The activity conducted at the Production House of Lilik Coastal Fabric Craftsman was attended by the business owner and a number of employees. This coastal fabric business was only established in 2019 with bulk coastal fabric production as its main operation. The production has been distributed both domestically and internationally.

As a newly established business, this coastal fabric business has faced problems that require them to seek assistance and mentoring. The problems are, among other, business owners’ lack of entrepreneurial knowledge, leading the business owner only focuses on fulfilling orders. Hence, they are less focused on managing the business as a whole. In addition, some padder machine (a machine for fabric coloring and cleaning) components need to be replaced immediately due to obsolete.

For this reason, the Behavioral Accounting community service team considers the need to enhance craftsmen’s entrepreneurial knowledge. This aims to help the owner to be able to manage and develop his business. The community team delivered entrepreneurial materials and followed by an open discussion with the craftsmen. The material presented is related to financial planning, production planning, and targeted marketing strategies to expand market outreach.

Other than providing training materials, the team also provides equipment assistance in the form of padder machine spare parts, which were handed directly during the community service program. This equipment assistance serves as a solution to the identified problems, uncovered through pre-program implementation interviews.

The team has placed a spare parts order on a workshop to produce and assemble a padder engine frame and padder tub. After the new spare parts are finished, the Lilik Coastal Fabric owner and craftsmen, together with the Community Service Team tested the padder machine. This machine operation test is conducted after the new frame and tinting tub are installed.

After successful trials, the padder engine spare parts handover ceremony was conducted. Hopefully, the spare parts can speed up project production. This will allow the business to meet the customers’ demands in greater quantity, quickly, effectively, and efficiently. At the end of the assistance program, the community service team evaluates the level of understanding of the material delivered.

This dissemination and entrepreneurial training provide sufficient theoretical and applied knowledge to the Lilik Coastal Fabric Craftsmen to improve their entrepreneurial skills.

The Lilik Coastal Fabric Craftsmen express their gratitude, since now they have a machine that can accommodate customer orders. Therefore, the production capacity in the next period will be improved.

Master in Management Study Program Hosted Academic Consolidation Workshop

Lecturers of Master in Management Study Program (MM), Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), attending Workshop in Academic Consolidation for MM Study Program, 17-18 February 2023, in Salatiga.

Retno Tanding Suryandari, SE, ME, Ph.D., the Head of the Master in Management Study Program, in her remarks, stated that this agenda aims to maintain the networking among lecturers and to find the best solution for the problems faced by MM students and thesis supervisor in completing the student thesis and publication requirement.

Further, she reveals that this workshop is a follow-up program from the previous coordination meeting.

The sharing session was divided into two stages, the first is regarding Student Thesis Writing and Publication, Challenges, and Proposed Solution. This session invites two speakers, namely, Prof. Dr. Hunik Sri Runing Sawitri, M.Si., and Dr. Atmaji, MM. The following discussion regarding Graduate Learning Outcomes was reviewed by Dr. Werner Ria Murhadi, SE, MM., CSA, CIB, CRP (APMMI), and Dr. Sinto Sunaryo, M.Si.

The agenda continues with a working session in infrastructure enhancement, student thesis completion, and publication system, and Graduate Learning Outcome for HRM, finance, marketing, sharia finance, and strategic/operation management concentration elective.

Preparing for February-July 2023 Semester Session, FEB UNS Conducted Faculty Council Meeting

Faculty Council Meeting is a recurring agenda hosted by the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) to prepare for the new semester and at the same time evaluate the previous semester’s activities. The Faculty Council Meeting for the February-July 2023 Session was conducted in Suhardi Building FEB UNS, Wednesday, 8 February 2023.

Other than discussing the teaching and learning agenda for the upcoming semester commencing on 13 February 2023, the Dean of FEB UNS, Prof. Djoko Suhardjanto, M.Com. (Hons), Ak., in his remarks also reveals another agenda to be implemented in the coming semester, being the LAMEMBA accreditation for the Accounting Study Program and Management Study Program.

“Assessment conducted by LAMEMBA is significantly different from the one conducted by BAN-PT, where almost all assessments in BAN-PT are quantitative, while 90 percent of LAMEMBA assessment is qualitative. All the 27 criteria are expected to be internationally competitive. Vision, mission, teaching, research, and community service must be on the international level,” said Prof. Djoko.

The Dean also explains the UNS 47th Anniversary Celebration that will involve all UNS academic members, including lecturers, academic support staff, students, and alumni.

Prof. Dr. Izza Mafruhah, S.E, M.Si., the Vice-Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs, explains various aspects of academic, research, and student affairs such as Learning Method, Academic Calendar for February-July 2023, Internal Lecturer Academic Acceleration, Home Lecture, and Key Performance Indicator (KPI) achieved by the Academic, Research, and Student Affairs Division.

The Vice-Dean for Human Resources, Finance, and Logistics FEB UNS, Dr. Djuminah, M.Si. Ak., disseminate short information regarding HRM and infrastructure renovation plan in FEB, including additional international standard classrooms, the establishment of an e-coding laboratory (Coding of Electrical Laboratory), additional lecturer room in Soedarah Soepono Building, expansion of parking lot, and integration of academic support staff room in the first floor of Soeharno TS Building, FEB UNS.

Meanwhile, for the Planning, Business Partnership, and Information Division, Dr. Mugi Harsono, SE, M.Si., the Vice-Dean for Planning, Business Partnership, and Information Affairs, reported the established and implemented industrial partnerships for MBKM Program, International Community Service Pilot Program, and Alumni Collaboration. Dr. Mugi also reveals the opportunity for FEB UNS academic members to participate in the Faculty Business Management Board (BPUF).

After dissemination from the Vice-Dean, the faculty members can deliver their questions, suggestion, and advice, to facilitate FEB UNS progress to be more accomplished and well-developed.

Dr. Sinto Sunaryo Invites Academic Members to Take on Local Cases for Case-Based Method Learning

How to start writing a case study for a case-based learning method? There are many sources of cases, there are cases published in international journals or even journals specialized in publishing cases, these cases can also be obtained from the Harvard Business School, and short cases are included in a textbook.

The problem is most of the cases are developed according to international context or occur in other countries. There is only a limited number of academician taking on cases focused on the Indonesian context to be applied in case-based learning. In fact, there are innumerable Indonesian cases available for discussion and worth publishing, provided that the writing process follows the applicable standard.

The current condition becomes a challenge for academicians to incorporate cases with local context in the learning process to allow students to understand cases emerging in their surrounding community.

This statement is delivered by Dr. Sinto Sunaryo, SE, MSi, SHRM-CP., a lecturer from FEB UNS, presenting her material in a webinar hosted by the Local Wisdom Research Group, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Tuesday, 28 February 2023.

Further, Dr. Sinto explains why the case-based study is important.

“Case-based studies are important, not only because this method has been used in renowed global business schools, but also not only because of the requirement of the Dikti to be part of the Key Performance Indicator (KPI), but because of the very nature of a case study itself, which is the Students will learn, and what we can teach to students through case-based studies,” she explained.

According to her, the core of the case-based studies is to give students the opportunity to delve deeply into case-solving, learn, analyze, and make strategic decisions on real-world problems, in a real-life situation. The case written is based on a real-life, it represents a piece of the reality of the case object, should not be fictional in nature, and can be from either a for-profit organization, non-profit organization, or industry.

Secondly, the case-based study offers students the opportunity to apply their knowledge and management in a classroom-based laboratory. The classroom should be a dedicated laboratory where students can learn, apply theory and concepts, and sharpen their skills under a minimum risk.

“This piece of reality presented in the case was intended to represent the reality faced by the case object, but without the actual risk that the object bears. For instance, students don’t actually have to be involved in a company operation,” she explains.

The third, case-based study offered students the opportunity to hone their competency in identifying, analyzing, and solving problems multiple times, under various settings, either in academic settings based on specific perspectives such as human resource, finance, or organizational background.

Further, Dr. Sinto explains various sources of case study inspiration that can be found in various media such as magazines, newspapers, textbooks, students’ experiences, alumni, or even business partners.

As for case writing, a case study must portray an actual situation and is related to managerial problems or address the managerial decision. The case must also relate to a theoretical concept or specific method.

At the end of the session, in front of 200 participants, Dr. Sinto provided an example of case-based study material authored by FEB UNS Management Lecturer Team entitled “A Casebook in Business Management: Indonesian Traditional Herbal Industry,” and published by Salemba Empat, one of the leading publisher in Indonesia. The book was published in English, which allows Indonesian cases to be discussed in the global teaching and learning process.

Participants were highly interested in the topic discussed, proven by the discussion participation.

Splendid Strategy and Teamwork, FEB UNS Students Won 2nd Place in Islamic Economics Olympiad

A student team from the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, won 2nd place in Islamic Economics Olympiad, hosted by Universitas Darussalam Gontor (UNIDA Gontor), 10-24 January 2023.

A brilliant teamwork from three FEB UNS students, Novita Anggun Pratiwi (Management Study Program), Muhammad Fatih Mafaiziddin (Management Study Program), and Fathir Fikro Al Ishlah (Development Economy Study Program) brought them to the final stage in a virtual competition against 25 teams from all across Indonesia.

In the final stage, the are 6 (six) teams, the UNS team, Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Brawijaya (2 teams), and Universitas Mataram, must compete and showcase their ingenuity and agility during the final stages. In each stage, participants must engage in English.

During these stages, the teams must compete in four rounds, the first is a mandatory quiz, the second is an exchange-questions round, the third is a battle round, and the fourth is the economist figure round. The challenge uses a minus-point assessment method for each wrong answer.

The questions prepared by the judges are about the micro and macro sharia economy, financial institutions, fatwas and regulations, capital market, pre-sharia economy development, global Islamic economist, and knowledge of Qur’an content regarding Muamalah.

In these last four final stages, FEB Team set a strategy to only answer questions when they are confident with the answer and avoid negative points, which then brought them to be the 2nd winner.

The team leader, Novita Anggun, who was familiar with the championship and students’ olympiad come up with this strategy for the team to win the Islamic Economics Olympiad. She was in charge of the overall championship framework starting from registration, material dissemination, group study system, teamwork mechanism, presentation material, answer composition to be delivered to the judges, and many others.

“Before participating in this championship, I tried to instill a specific value in my team with an objective to let them know and understand that it does not matter what problems arise in the future, since we cannot predict each of probable problems, we must go on and participate to the final stage. Never be afraid to try, we will never know the extent of our competency and capacity if we never try,” she reveals.

She also mentioned that a race toward virtue is recommended to human beings. Race toward virtue will bring a better output because the standard for winning the race will keep improving, thus, encouraging us to enhance our morale.

In every championship we get new experiences, opportunities to learn time management, and how to establish priorities to accelerate our competency during the competition.

“We learn the wisdom to trust all Allah plans, to believe, to be sincere, and grateful for each and every opportunity given,” she concluded.

Taking on Influencer Micro Marketing Optimization Platform for MSME, FEB UNS Student Won First Place in Business Plan Competition

Splendid achievements are carved by students of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, within various championships. One of these achievements was accomplished by the FEB UNS Student Team consisting of Kgs M Mullah Ibadurrahman, Hanun Aulia Yasmin, and Nufika Mariyatul Kiptiyah.

Ibadurrahman (Ibad) and the team members, succeeded in winning first place in Business Plan Competition hosted by KOPMA BM Politeknik Negeri Semarang (Polines) on January 2023.

Inflane (Influencer Lane): ‘Influencer Micro Marketing Optimization Platform for MSME to Support Golden Indonesian Digital Talent,’ is selected as the topic for the FEB UNS team to their glory. The platform is useful for business planning specifically as a marketing media liaison platform between influencers and MSMEs.

Ibad revealed to the feb.uns.ac.id team that in the competition, the team competes to win and learn from their experiences from previous championships, learning from the suggestions from the judges, and other participants’ excellent presentations. Moreover, the team also took several courses out of university.

The rivalry is quite tight in the final stages with only 10 teams from all across Indonesia, which requires the team to work harder.

“We never expect to win a championship in our last challenge, especially because it is quite hard to win, thus, this opportunity gives our team a chance to learn more and deepen each member’s knowledge and skill,” he states.

Together with the team, Ibad has brought home some medals for FEB UNS, among others First Champion in Business Plan National Shariah Economic Competition UIN RMS Surakarta and Second place in National Scientific Writing Annual Conference Economics Forum (ALCOFE) UNS on October 2022.

According to him, the commitment of the team members becomes the key to great actions and it is not an easy feat to find members with the same vision and mission. Hence, it is important to always focus and continuously improve self-competency to achieve future dreams.

The student who was the Head of Islamic Economy Study (KEI) FEB UNS always remembers a message from his senior to be a champion to stay confident with your initial ideas. Starting with a positive environment and supportive team members, finally, he can train and develop his self-confidence.

“A message I want to convey to my fellow students, dare to dream big because this learning experience we gain during our study will never get repeated and there are many opportunities available. Moreover, it is important to remember to stay open-minded, always eager to learn something new, and to be responsible to the end of the process,” he concluded.

FEB UNS Encourages Students to Participate in IISMA

Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, in collaboration with the UNS International Office (UPT KLI UNS) hosted IISMA (Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards) Dissemination on Thursday, 9 February 2023.

IISMA is a scholarship scheme funded by the Republic of Indonesia Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), for Indonesian students to participate in a one-semester mobility program in a prominent global university or industry. This scholarship is offered under two schemes for undergraduate degree and diploma degree students.

In this program, selected students can spend a semester studying at an international university and develop intercultural communication and leadership skill. Aside from that, they will learn about the culture of the country, expand their international network, and carry out practical assignments to enhance their skill.

The virtual dissemination was attended by FEB UNS students from four study programs, the Accounting Study Program, Management Study Program, Development Economics Study Program, and Digital Business Study Program.

Prof. Dr. Izza Mafruhah, SE, M.Si., Vice-Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs FEB UNS, appreciates the students for their interest in IISMA through her remarks.

According to her, by participating in IISMA, students will get uncountable opportunities.

“Students participating in IISMA will be the pride of everyone, not only the students themself, but also their campus and parents. IISMA provides students with exceptional learning and experiences. You can also get to improve your soft skills, which will increase your opportunity both when you’re entering the job market or continuing your studies,” she said.

Meanwhile, Rino Ardhian Nugroho, S.Sos., M.T.I. Ph.D, the Head of UNS International Office (UPT KLI UNS), states that IISMA in 2023 will be the third IISMA delegation in UNS.

In 2021, four FEB UNS students were successfully selected as IISMA delegation, they were Dian Cita Putri delegated to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Hanifah El Sandy delegated to University of Pisa Italy, Nabila Rania Dewi delegated to Hanyang University South Korea, and Anastasia Kiranahita Santikajati delegated to University of Szeged Hungaria. While in 2022, Chaya Edita Anggraeni was selected as a delegation to the University of Warsaw Poland.

“IISMA is one of the Programs hosted by Dikti for higher education students, which has become quite a pride for the Minister of Education. In fact, this program has various positive aspects since it aims to improve students’ knowledge. Not only can students learn something new, but they can also learn how to compete with international students around the world. This opportunity offers the rare opportunity, one that you will not get under the national MBKM program, a chance to live abroad, IISMA is sure an exciting opportunity,” he revealed.

Furthermore, students were given a scholarship for one semester. During their stay, the student shall take a full-time study and is not allowed to work.

UNS International Office (UPT KLI UNS) will provide all necessary facilities and assistance to increase their opportunity to pass the selection process, such as in essay writing and other assistance.

Marieti Debyora Gardiana, S.Si., Administrative Sub-Division Coordinator of the UNS International Office, explains in detail the IISMA Program. To prepare students in participating in IISMA, the UNS International Office has disseminated IISMA Program early on. The UNS International Office will train students in essay writing, English comprehension and proficiency, interview training, and sharing session with the former IISMA alumni.

Students applying for IISMA will also face an internal screening in UNS, which aims to ensure that those participating in the national-level selection have fulfilled the requirements.

Management Study Program Welcoming Visit from HNU Germany

The Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, never ceased to enhance its international collaboration network. This time, the Study Program welcomed a visit from Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU) Germany, to build a collaboration in the student exchange program.

The welcoming ceremony attended by the representative of HNU Germany, the Head of the Study Program, lecturers, and students of the Management Study Program, was conducted at First Assembly Room, Soeharno TS FEB UNS Building, on Thursday (02/06/2022).

The Head of the Management Study Program, Dr. Atmaji, MM., expressed his gratitude to the HNU representative in Solo. After introducing FEB UNS and the Management Study Program through a short video profile, Dr. Atmaji hopes that the visit would allow the two institutions to gain a better understanding of the possibilities for partnership and other academic activities.

Further, Dr. Sinto Sunaryo provided an explanation of the teaching and learning process applied in the Management Study Program. Dr. Sinto also explains the learning method applied in the Study Program, available supporting facilities, and the MBKM Program. “Hopefully, this collaboration can be useful for both institutions,” said Dr. Sinto.

Two representatives of HNU Germany, Verena Seitz, the Head of the International Office of HNU, and Cornelia Häusler, Deputy Head of the International Office, introduce HNU to the participants. The introduction covers the university profile, directions, and available means of transportation to visit HNU, available programs, collaboration opportunities, lecturer profiles, and support provided by the HNU International Office for international students.

The agenda goes on with an interactive questions-and-answers session with the students. Students shows their enthusiasm during the session, especially regarding the offered credit semester, supporting facilities, and students criteria required by HNU for the student exchange program. Inauguration of Digital Business Study Program Student Association FEB UNS Invited Two Speakers

Digital Business Study Program Student Association (HMBD), Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta is inaugurated by the Dean of FEB UNS, represented by the Vice-Dean of Academic, Research, and Student Affairs FEB UNS, Prof. Dr. Izza Mafruhah, SE, M.Si, on Wednesday 22 February 2023 in the First Assembly Room FEB UNS.

“In the name of Allah, The Most Gracious and The Most Merciful, representing the Dean of FEB UNS, on this day, Wednesday, 22 February 2023, the Digital Business Study Program Student Association is officially inaugurated,” announced Prof. Izza.

In her remarks, Prof. Izza states that as the youngest study program in FEB UNS, the Digital Business Study Program is outstanding. It has garnered great interest, with thousands of applications, but only 60 prospective students were selected to be enrolled in the Study Program.

In the first year, the Digital Business Study Program has delegated its students to Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

Further, Prof. Izza hopes that HMBD will have annual agenda, which not only involve students in UNS but also national students. There should be annual agenda for students association, for instance, Accounting Study Program Students Association with ACTIVE, Management Study Program Students Association with Management Carnival, and Development Economics Study Program Student Association with ALCOFE.

The Academic, Research, and Student Affairs Office FEB UNS conducted a monthly assembly with the student association and organization (Ormawa). This meeting aims to facilitate students’ activities and allow the faculty to monitor the implementation.

Prof. Izza suggested that students can join any Ormawa available within the faculty. Students who actively participate in Ormawa activities have strong talents, as they are used to collaboration and building networks with different personalities. Hopefully, students who are active in student organizations can maintain their studies to get graduated on time. “You are free to join and participate in any activity but don’t forget your main duty as students,” she concluded.

The inauguration was marked by sharing a cut ‘tumpeng’ from the Head of the Digital Business Study Program, Dr. Tastaftiyan Risfandy, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., to the Chair of HMBD, Athaya.

To celebrate the inauguration, the Study Program also invites two speakers, namely, Addy Wahyu Fitriadi S.ST, M.T.I., from the Central Bureau of Statistics for Surakarta Region, delivering material entitled “Digitalization in Government Office,” and Syaiful Amri, Sub Branch Head BTN Syariah Sragen, with material entitled “Millennials and Digital Banking.”

DESP FEB UNS Disseminates MBKM Program to Students

Development Economy Study Program (DESP), Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, hosted a Dissemination of Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) Program to DESP students, especially for the 4th-semester students, on 28 February 2023 at Soedarah Soepono Building FEB UNS. This agenda aims to prepare students to understand the stages, procedures, and process dynamics of MBKM application in DESP FEB UNS.

Bhimo Rizky Samudro, S.E., M.Si,. Ph.D., the Head of DESP, delivers an overview of the MBKM Program hosted by the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), which the objective to give liberty and autonomy to education institutions to be independent of bureaucracy, while lecturers are freed from complex bureaucracy, and students are given the freedom to choose their preferred field of study.

Several MBKM programs provided by the Ministry of Education are student exchange, independent study/project, entrepreneurship, research, humanities project, rural development, internship, and teaching assistance.

The DESP has provided various supporting accommodations to facilitate MBKM Program implementation.

“The Study Program always provides support and assistance for students who wish to participate in MBKM to improve student’s individual quality and competency,” he explains.

To this day, the Study Program has delegates outbound students through the Permata Sakti Program and welcomed inbound students through an internal program in collaboration with the Economics Education Study Program FKIP UNS under the HRM course.

Moreover, DESP also establishes a reciprocal partnership, student exchange (inbound and outbound) with Development Economy Study Program FEB in Universitas Brawijiaya, Universitas Negeri Jember, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, and Universitas Negeri Semarang. DESP FEB UNS also received inbound students from the reciprocal partnership with Development Economy Study Program FEB Universitas Lambung Mangkurat and participated in Permata Merdeka MBKM Program.

Further, Dr. Bhimo explains the system for Kampus Merdeka Program applied in DESP FEB UNS, established by the Study Program to assist students through their participation in the Program.

For instance, in the student exchange program, DESP chose non-block learning for MBKM Program. Through this model, the Study Program offers General Courses and Study Program-specific courses at the introductory level in the first and second semesters.

In the third and fourth semesters, the Study Program offers intermediate-level Program-specific courses, while in the fourth to sixth semesters, students have the right to take courses from other Study Programs, either out of university, internship (fifth and seventh semester), or courses offered by other Study Programs in their home university (sixth semester). After completing the MBKM Program, students will continue their studies to the eighth semester to finish their final student thesis.
